The 2021 DocLands Honors Award is presented to Academy Award®-winning, Ohio-based filmmakers JULIA REICHERT and STEVEN BOGNAR for their commitment and determination to get to the beating heart of human stories by focusing specifically on the most personal experiences of working people while exploring the ever-changing human condition. Their film American Factory was the recipient of the 2020 Academy Award®  for Best Documentary Feature and is currently streaming on Netflix. Earlier films include A Lion in the House (2006), which won the Primetime Emmy® for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking, and The Last Truck (2009), which premiered on HBO and was Academy Award nominated for Best Short Documentary. Bognar & Reichert’s newest film, 9to5: The Story of a Movement (2020), was an official selection of the SXSW, AFI DOCS, IDFA, Full Frame, DOC NYC and Mill Valley film festivals. Reichert received Oscar nominations for her work Union Maids (1976) and Seeing Red: Stories of American Communists (1983) (with Jim Klein). Julia’s student film Growing Up Female (1971) was the first feature documentary of the modern Women’s Movement. It was selected for the National Film Registry. Bognar’s first feature documentary, Personal Belongings (1996), premiered at Sundance and screened on P.O.V. His documentary shorts include Last Reel (Telluride Film Festival), Foundry Night Shift (True/False Film Festival), and Picture Day (Sundance).
